Fire Keepers:
A Journey of Love
Kirkland Library
February 4-26, 2023
Vernissage:
February 11th, 5-7pm
The Indigenous Fire Keeper dates back hundreds of thousands of years. They set fires to fight wildfires and to cleanse the land. This practice enabled Indigenous communities to evolve and thrive. Green would sprout a short time after a swath of land was burned, creating a green buffer and slowing any wildfire.
This practice of embracing and respecting fire versus simply trying to eliminate or extinguish it is an interesting metaphor to relationships of any kind. Embrace the hard times and the easy times. Use them to learn and to grow. Respect one another and your differences.
We hope you enjoy our exhibit, and the journey of emotions experienced when we experience love. We wanted to take the opportunity to recognize that relationships aren’t always all roses. Sometimes we need to say goodbye. Sometimes we feel loss, anger or frustration. Sometimes it’s amazing, and sometimes it’s just not. All of these things are okay, and all of these things are the kaleidoscope of emotions that make us human.
Like the Fire Keepers, let’s embrace the fire. Respect it. Respect ourselves, our emotions, along with whoever we are experiencing them with.
